Social Networking and Physical Health

After watching a TED talk by Nicholas Christakis on social networking entitled The hidden influence of social networks I wonder if our newly awakened awareness of social networks through regular interactions with Twitter and Facebook (to name just two) are making us more capable, as a culture/species, to consider the impact of networks on our health and vitality in ways that were oblivious to us only a decade ago.

  1. I believe it is a huge risk, especially to young people. I am finding out that these networks take a ton of time. So here I am on the computer all day at my desk at work- then come home with my lap top in my lap on the sofa. Hmm. I'm going to stop blaming my age for my weight gain!!!!!

Seriously, this issue has to stay on the table for any conversation about how we use technology moving forward. There are a couple of movies that I fear are a potential future like Idiocracy. Scary!

  2. Ah, but the thinking in the video was that we use social networking, not just the computer kind, to figure out what is best for the species. I think all the mindless and anonymous sniping - like the verbal sh*tstorm that passes for political discourse online - will turn out, in the big picture, to be we humans simply clearing our throat as we learn how to communicate more broadly and more precicely so peple will listen to us and think about what we are saying. Mi dos centavos.
